Boston turned a good performance from starting pitcher Tom Gordon into a 3-2 triumph over the Houston Astros at Fenway Park. The winner was Gordon. He threw 8.0 innings of 4-hit ball. The loser was Luis Castillo. Luis Avilan, who is a two-time All-Star, nailed down the save.
Tom Lampkin, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1992 draft, helped out the Boston cause in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run-scoring walk. For the game, the designated hitter was 1 for 2 with a walk.
"Tom is good at sticking to his strengths," said Boston manager Doug Morton.
With the win, Boston boosts its record to 5-7.
