Mets Squeeze By San Francisco, 7-6
|
With left fielder Dick Allen leading the charge, the New York (N) Mets defeated the San Francisco Giants, 7-6, at Shea Stadium. Allen, who led the NL in wins above replacement with 10.3 in 1999, was 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Jose Mujica, credited with the win in relief, is now 2-0. He allowed no runs on no hits in 0.1 innings. The National League-leading Mets are 76-26.
Billy Werber was the walk-off hero for New York (N). With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mets second baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"The ending was a real humdinger," Werber told reporters after the game.
