The St. Louis Cardinals inaugurated the 2001 campaign with a disappointing 10-3 loss to the Montreal Expos at Busch Stadium. Montreal third baseman Eddie Mathews had a big impact on the outcome. He slugged 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice.

Montreal used a well-timed hit by Paul Janish to capture the win. The shortstop socked a 2-run double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Expos ahead, 3-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

"It was a good team win. Everybody threw something in," Janish told the Montreal Chronicle.
