Huntington Beach Hopeless Against Conley
Thursday, July 6th , 2000
The Huntington Beach Phoenix were almost helpless in their 5-0 loss to the Raleigh Sox and hurler Gene Conley. Conley kept the Phoenix confused all game, spinning a 5-hit shutout.
"Tip your hat to Conley," Huntington Beach manager said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."
The 23-year-old right-hander had 2 walks and 10 strikeouts in a strong performance.
"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Conley said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."
This season to date, Conley has a record of 3 wins and 8 losses with a 4.89 ERA, has appeared in 17 games and struck out 83 in 99.1 innings.
