Starting pitcher Jeff Suppan was a major factor in the 8-0 St. Louis Cardinals triumph over the San Francisco Giants. The slumping Giants have dropped 6 in a row.

John Valentin had a big 3-run home run for the Cardinals in the bottom of the fourth inning. With St. Louis leading 3-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he sized up a changeup from Albie Lopez, who finished 2nd in the AL in wins with 21 in 1985, and punished it. The result was his 15th home run of the season, which put the Cardinals on top, 6-0.
