The Philadelphia Phillies spoiled a good performance by Boston third baseman Marcus Giles, bumping off Boston, 8-6, at Veterans Stadium. Giles went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. The win went to Joe Johnson in relief, making him now 2-5. Jason Hammel took the loss for Boston. Ken Howell earned the save for Philadelphia, his 14th.

The Red Sox had been locked in a 4-4 tie with the Phillies going into the bottom of the seventh inning. That changed quickly when the 23-year old catcher Mark Salas came to the plate. Salas hit a 2-run double on a first pitch fastball from Boston hurler Mike Dunn. It was Salas's 9th double of the year.

"It was offense that won us the game," said winning manager Jason Spiegel.

The win for the Phillies lifted their record to 32-31.
