Seattle got a strong outing from Andy Benes as the Mariners defeated the Cleveland Guardians, 5-2, at Rogers Centre. Benes, the winner, moves to 8-4. He threw 8 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 6 and giving up no walks. Rocky Coppinger earned the save for Seattle, his 15th of the year.

Seattle right fielder Babe Barna contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the fifth. With two down, he hit a slider to center field for a 2-run single. It was his 61st hit of the season and put the Mariners ahead, 5-1.

Barna said his team "played with a purpose."
