New York (N) Beaten, 5-3, by Montreal
|
The Montreal Expos defeated the New York (N) Mets, 5-3, at Shea Stadium. Montreal was led by slugging left fielder John Hale, who went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles. Rex Brothers picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Salome Barojas suffered the loss. Lefty West earned the save for Montreal, his 1st.
The game was at a stalemate until catcher Johnny Peacock came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing New York (N) pitcher Salome Barojas, he hit a first pitch splitter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Montreal on top, 4-3.
"We did enough to win," said Hale.
The loss drops New York (N) to 3-2.
