Red Sox Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Twins, 3-1
|
Jason Hammel, who finished 3rd in the NL in wins with 20 in 1995, never let the Twins get in a groove. The right-hander used his bread and butter, his fastball, to pitch the Red Sox to a win, 3-1. Boston is now 23-24, while Minnesota is 20-25.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Don Young came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Minnesota pitcher Joe Bonikowski, he hit a first pitch slider for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting Boston on top, 3-1.
"We did a lot of really good things and it was a good win," said Red Sox manager Doug Morton.
