The 8-6 Detroit win over New York (A) was due largely to Bruce Bochte. The Tigers right fielder was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. Detroit reliever Dave Otto picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Yorman Bazardo took the loss. Bob Kelly earned the save for Detroit, his 14th.

The Yankees had been locked in a 4-4 tie with the Tigers going into the bottom of the seventh inning. That changed quickly when the 26-year old first baseman Dan Johnson came to the plate. Johnson hit a 2-run double on a 1-0 fastball from New York (A) hurler Yorman Bazardo. It was Johnson's 4th double of the year.

"You can't hate how you win if you win," said Detroit skipper Don Dinsmore.

The Tigers now have a record of 25-15 with the win over New York (A).
