Almost There: Detroit On Cusp of DS Triumph After 5-2 Win
|
The Detroit Tigers moved to within one game of the League Championship Series, downing the visiting Seattle Mariners at Tiger Stadium by a score of 5-2. Tigers left-hander Ken Brett had a strong outing in which he threw 7.2 innings of 5-hit ball. The win gives the Tigers a 3-1 advantage in the best-of-7 Divisional Series.
Tied up with the Mariners in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tigers got a boost from designated hitter Merritt Ranew. With a runner on 2nd, Ranew saw a 0-1 sinker from Andy Benes and hit a 2-run home run to break the stalemate and put Detroit on top, 3-1.
"Throwing strikes was the main thing," Brett said.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
