Giants Clip Mariners, 5-4
|
The San Francisco Giants defeated the Seattle Mariners, 5-4, in National League action at Eclipse Park. San Francisco pitcher Tom Gordon had a standout performance. Gordon yielded 4 runs over 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9. His record improves to 1-1. Garrett Olson earned the save, his 6th.
Yogi Berra had a big 2-run home run for the Giants in the bottom of the fourth inning. With San Francisco leading 3-0 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a changeup from 21-year old right-handed pitcher Andy Benes and punished it. The result was his 1st home run of the season, which put the Giants on top, 5-0.
"Good teams find a way to win close games," Berra said.
With the win, San Francisco improves its record to 15-13.
