The Chicago (N) Cubs had to overcome a good performance from Minnesota pitcher Vern Law to claim a 3-2 win at Metropolitan Stadium. Law went 8 innings and allowed 1 run. The win gives Chicago (N) a record of 15-10.

Matt Williams came through with a big-time hit for Chicago (N). The third baseman smacked a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give his team the lead, 3-2. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"We were in it," said Minnesota manager Dan Hornbaker. "We just didn't score enough runs."
