Phillies Suffer 9-5 Home Defeat
|
At Veterans Stadium, the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago (N) Cubs were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd.
Though he had a terrific game, Eddie Mathews could not prevent his team, the Philadelphia Phillies, from absorbing a loss. Chicago (N) won the game, 9-5. Mathews was 1-2 with a home run and 2 walks. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Chicago (N) pitcher Tommy Milone earned the win, hiking his record to 2-3. Tommy Boggs suffered the loss.
Hank Greenberg hit a run-scoring double off Tommy Boggs in the top of the first, which put the Cubs in front, 1-0. In addition to the double, Greenberg had 1 single, while going 2 for 5.
"Some of the guys in here work hard, some of the guys just kind of fall out of bed and get it done. Whatever works I guess, we won this one," Greenberg told the Chicago (N) Citizen.
The victory makes Chicago (N) 14-10, as the team seeks a return to the playoffs in 2000.
