Mets Rebuff Cardinals, 4-3
|
The New York (N) Mets faced a tough opponent in St. Louis pitcher Johnny Welch, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Busch Stadium by a final score of 4-3. Welch went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs. New York (N) starter Don Drysdale was credited with the win after throwing 105 pitches over 7 innings. His record now stands at 21-3. Bill Gogolewski, who leads the NL in saves with 38, nailed down the save.
New York (N) took a 4-2 lead on Mike Schmidt's 40th home run of the season. The solo home run, which Schmidt hit in the top of the eighth, left St. Louis pitcher Ed Fallenstein visibly frustrated.
"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Schmidt.
The first-place Mets have their sights set on making a deep playoff run.
