Starting pitcher Bruce Howard had a solid game. He was a big reason the Detroit Tigers throttled the Boston Red Sox, 3-2. The winner was Howard. He threw 8.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The loser was Mike Fiers. Bob Kelly recorded the save for Detroit, his 7th of the season.

Leon McFadden had a big run-scoring triple for the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Detroit leading 2-1 and a runner on 2nd, he got a fastball from Mike Fiers, who finished 4th in the AL in wins with 15 in 1996, and swatted a triple to right-center. It was his 1st triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Tigers ahead, 3-1.

"Every loss hurts," said Boston manager Doug Morton. "But this was a tough one."

The win lifts Detroit to a record of 9-7.
