Expos Victorious at San Francisco, 5-1
|
A nice crowd turned out for a clash between the Montreal Expos and San Francisco Giants.
Steven Matz, who finished 3rd in the AL in strikeouts with 172 in 1992, never let the Giants get in a groove. The left-hander used his bread and butter, his fastball, to pitch the Expos to a win, 5-1. In 7 innings, Matz surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. He allowed 1 run.
The Expos got a big at-bat from designated hitter George Shuba. For the game, Shuba hit 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice. In the top of the third, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 33rd home run of the season gave Montreal a 2-0 lead.
"Steven is good at sticking to his strengths," said Montreal manager Marwan Najdawi.
Montreal raised its record to 75-71 with the win.
