Paul Erickson never let St. Louis get something going. The New York (N) right-hander commanded his fastball in pitching the Mets to a 4-1 win. Reliever Jose Mujica picked up the win. His record improves to 2-0. Nick Pivetta, who is tied for 10th in the NL in holds with 8, took the loss. Bill Gogolewski notched his 29th save in 29 chances.

New York (N) took a 3-1 lead on Billy Werber's 10th home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which Werber hit in the bottom of the seventh, left St. Louis pitcher Nick Pivetta visibly frustrated.

"Bottom line," said St. Louis skipper David Mandel, "we didn't play well enough to win."

The first-place Mets have won 5 in a row.
