Milwaukee Upended by Seattle, 5-2
|
The inspired effort of Milwaukee right fielder Johnny Grubb was not enough to prevent a loss, 5-2, to the Seattle Mariners. Grubb went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Max Macon, now 1-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 3 hits in 1.1 innings. Rocky Coppinger earned his 26th save in 32 chances.
Don Mattingly had a big run-scoring double for the Mariners in the top of the third inning. With Seattle leading 3-2 and a runner on 2nd, he got a fastball from Pete Smith, who is tied for 3rd in the AL with a 7.7 K/9 rate, and swatted a double to center. It was his 36th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Mariners ahead, 4-2.
"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Mattingly, "one at-bat at a time."
Seattle is now 77-43, Milwaukee 78-42.
