Guardians Need Extra Innings to Top Red Sox, 8-6
Despite a fine performance by shortstop Vern Stephens, the Boston Red Sox lost to the Cleveland Guardians, 8-6, in 10 innings. Stephens was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 doubles, and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 2. Ken Giles earned the save for Cleveland, his 1st. The loss puts Boston at 1-1.

Cleveland went up, 7-6, on Glenn Hoffman's 2nd double of the season. The run-scoring double, which Hoffman hit in the top of the tenth, left Boston pitcher Greg Bollo feeling deflated.

"You know, at the end of the day, it's about who scores the most runs," said Cleveland manager Kevin Conway.
