DeShields Slugs Tigers to 6-5 Win
|
The Detroit Tigers defeated the Miami Marlins by the score of 6-5, with the biggest share of the credit going to second baseman Delino DeShields. DeShields went 3-4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2 for the Tigers on the day. Jeff Karstens got the win, improving to 9-9. He worked 7 innings, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 5. Bob Kelly, who finished 4th in the NL in saves with 30 in 1994, nailed down the save.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Mitch Maier? The Detroit right fielder had a 2-run double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Tigers on top, 5-4. For the game, Maier had 1 double and 1 single in 3 at-bats.
"Our guys are never satisfied," said Detroit manager Don Dinsmore.
The Tigers, at 61-49, have now won 4 straight.
