Cardinals Top Cubs in Extras, 7-5
|
The St. Louis Cardinals needed 11 innings to defeat the Chicago (N) Cubs, 7-5, at Wrigley Field. St. Louis designated hitter Jim Russell had a superb performance. He hit 2 home runs. He scored 3 times and drove in 5. Vince Colbert picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 4-4. Dustin McGowan, who is the 4th-best prospect in the Cubs organization, was tagged with the loss. The save was credited to Nick Pivetta, his 2nd.
Russell had a game-changing home run in the top of the 11th. On a full count fastball from Dustin McGowan, he banged a 2-run home run to left-center, giving the Cardinals a 7-5 lead. It was the 4th home run of the year for Russell.
"You know, at the end of the day, it's about who scores the most runs," said St. Louis manager David Mandel.
The 7th-place Cardinals are 49-53.
